John Dumelo (born 3 February 1984) is a renowned Ghanaian actor and politician who hails from Ghana. He gained significant attention not only for his acting prowess but also for his involvement in politics. In 2014, he became the first Ghanaian to achieve a million likes on Facebook. Born to Mr. John Dumelo, a Civil Engineer, and Mrs. Antoinette Dumelo, a Customs Officer, John has made a significant impact in both the entertainment and political sectors of Ghana.

Early Life

  • John Dumelo was born in Ghana.
  • He received his basic education at Christ the King School in Accra.
  • During his time at Achimota School, he was an active member of the Drama Club and was recognized as the “Fliers Guy in Mo-TOWN”.
  • John began his acting journey in the early 1990s with a role in the movie “Baby Thief” when he was just 7 years old. For this role, he earned 20 thousand old Ghana Cedis (equivalent to 2 Ghana Cedis today).

Education

  • John attended Achimota School in Accra.
  • He pursued a degree in Civil Engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
  • He also participated and won the “Mr. University” contest at KNUST.
  • Later in his life, he enrolled at GIMPA’s School of Public Service and Governance.

Acting

  • John’s acting career began in the early 1990s.
  • He has starred in numerous films, some of which include “4Play”, “A Northern Affair”, “Adams Apples film series”, “A Private Storm”, “Blackmoney”, “Double Cross”, and “Ties that Bind”, among many others.

Business Ventures

  • Beyond acting, John is also a successful entrepreneur.
  • In 2012, he launched his clothing line named “J.Melo”.
  • He has also ventured into both crop and animal farming, showcasing his diverse interests and business acumen.

Political Engagement

  • John was actively involved in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Party’s Campaign in 2016.
  • He was rumored to have been appointed by the former president of Ghana, H.E John Dramani Mahama, to serve the Party as a Director of Operations for a pro-NDC youth group.
  • In 2019, he picked up a nomination form to contest in the NDC primaries as a parliamentary candidate.
  • He won the NDC parliamentary primaries to represent the NDC in Ayawaso West Wougon Constituency in the 2020 General Elections.
  • However, in the 2020 parliamentary elections, John lost to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) incumbent Lydia Alhassan for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency.

  • John Dumelo is happily married to Gifty Mawunya Nkornu.
  • Their grand wedding ceremony took place at the Royal Senchi Resort in Akosombo.
  • The couple was blessed with their first child on 16 October 2018, named John Dumelo Jnr., after his father.
