Nadine Vanessa Dorries (born 21 May 1957), known as Nadine Dorries, is a British politician and author who served as Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport from 2021 to 2022. She hails from Liverpool, England. She has held several ministerial roles under Boris Johnson and was appointed Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport in 2021. She is known for her socially conservative views and has clashed with party leadership in the past.

Early Life

  • Born Nadine Vanessa Bargery on 21 May 1957 in Liverpool, England.
  • Raised in the Anfield district of Liverpool and nearby towns of Halewood and Runcorn.
  • Attended Rose Heath Primary School and Halewood Grange Comprehensive School.
  • Grew up on a council estate with her bus driver father and stay-at-home mother.
  • Started training as a nurse at Warrington General Hospital in 1975 at age 18.

  • Studied nursing at Warrington General Hospital in Warrington, England in the 1970s.

Career

  • Worked as a nurse in Warrington and Liverpool from 1978-1981 after completing her training.
  • Became a medical representative for Ethicla Ltd in 1982 for a year.
  • Spent a year in Zambia from 1983-1984 as the head of a community school.
  • Founded child daycare company Company Kids Ltd in 1987 and sold it to BUPA in 1998.
  • Stood unsuccessfully as Conservative candidate for Hazel Grove in 2001 general election.
  • Worked as a special advisor to Oliver Letwin when he was Shadow Chancellor from 2001-2004.
  • Elected as Conservative MP for Mid Bedfordshire in 2005 general election.
  • Introduced several unsuccessful private member’s bills on reducing abortion time limits.
  • Served on Innovation, Universities, Science and Skills Committee and Health Select Committee.
  • Lost Conservative whip in 2012 for appearing on reality TV show without informing party.
  • Regained Conservative whip in 2013 after being suspended for 6 months.
  • Appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Patient Safety, Suicide Prevention and Mental Health in 2019 by Boris Johnson.
  • Promoted to Minister of State for same role in May 2020.
  • Became Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport in September 2021 cabinet reshuffle.
  • Stepped down as Culture Secretary in September 2022 and returned to backbenches under Liz Truss.
  • Announced in February 2023 she would not stand for re-election as MP in next general election.
