Early Life

Enoch Adejare Adeboye was born on March 2, 1942, in Ifewara, a town near Ife, in what was then the Southern Region of British Nigeria. He was raised in a humble family background, an experience that significantly shaped his character and future calling.

Education

Adeboye’s educational journey commenced at the Ilesha Grammar School, Ilesha, Osun State, in 1956. He later enrolled at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). However, due to the Nigeria Civil War, he transferred to the University of Ife (now known as Obafemi Awolowo University), graduating in 19 67 with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. The same year, he tied the knot with Foluke Adenike, and they were blessed with four children: Adeolu Adeboye, Bolu Adubi, Dare Adeboye, and Leke Adeboye.

Adeboye further advanced his education by obtaining a Master’s degree in Hydrodynamics in 1969 from the University of Lagos. His quest for knowledge didn’t stop there, as he achieved a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the same university in 1975.

Ministry

Adeboye’s spiritual journey with the Redeemed Christian Church of God began in 1973, initially serving as an interpreter. His dedication and service to God led to his ordination as a pastor in 1975 by Pastor Josiah Akindayomi. In 1981, he ascended to the position of General Overseer of the church. Adeboye committed three years to part-time service at Unilorin before relinquishing his university position to devote himself fully to ministry.

Under Adeboye’s leadership, the RCCG, once a little-known church, expanded its reach to approximately 198 nations as of March 2017, amassing over 14 million worshipers in Nigeria alone. Adeboye has expressed his ambition to establish churches within a five-minute walk in developing cities and a five-minute drive in developed cities.

Adeboye’s preaching often includes themes of prosperity, a stance he upholds, asserting that Pentecostals make a significant impact because they address both the present life and the life to come. He stepped down as General Overseer in 2017 following new legislation that restricted non-profit leadership to a maximum of 20 years of service and an age limit of less than 70 years.
